Not every dimmer switch is compatible with every LED bulb, and using an incompatible combination can cause flickering, buzzing, or bulbs that won't dim smoothly.
Why Doesn't Every Dimmer Work With LED Bulbs?
Older dimmer switches were designed for the higher electrical load of incandescent or halogen bulbs. LED bulbs draw much less power, and many older dimmers weren't designed to work reliably at such low loads — this is what causes flickering or a limited dimming range.
What Should I Look For?
Choose a dimmer switch that's specifically listed as LED-compatible (sometimes described as a “trailing edge” dimmer), and check the minimum and maximum load ratings against the combined wattage of the bulbs it's controlling.
Do All LED Bulbs Dim the Same Way?
No — always check that the LED bulbs themselves are marked as dimmable. Non-dimmable LEDs will not dim smoothly (or at all) even on a fully LED-compatible dimmer switch.
Still Not Sure?
If you're replacing bulbs in an existing dimmer circuit and notice flickering, it's usually the dimmer/bulb combination rather than a fault. Checking both the dimmer's compatibility rating and the bulb's dimmable rating together will usually resolve it.
