What is a Double Pole Switch?
A Double Pole (DP) switch is designed to control two circuits at once. In a typical household setting, this means switching both the live and the neutral simultaneously.

Why is it Needed?
Standard single pole switches, such as those used for most lights, only break the live connection. The neutral remains connected, which can increase the risk of electric shock if the circuit is being worked on. A DP switch isolates both live and neutral, ensuring no current flows through the circuit and making it much safer.

Where is a Double Pole Switch Used?
In the home, DP switches are most commonly used on ring mains. They are now required in kitchens, where a switch above the worktop can isolate appliances below the counter. This allows the electrical supply to be safely disconnected before moving or maintaining appliances.

Do You Need a DP Switch for Lighting?
Most UK lighting circuits only have a live connection at the switch, so a DP switch is not normally required.

As always, if you are unsure, it is best to seek advice from a qualified electrician who can provide safe and reliable guidance.
