What is a Fused Spur?

A fused spur is a wall-mounted outlet that provides a fixed, fused connection to an appliance — such as an extractor fan, waste disposal unit, or wall-mounted heater — rather than a plug-in socket. It contains its own fuse (usually 3A or 13A) to protect the specific appliance and its cable.

What is the Difference Between a Switched and Unswitched Fused Spur?

A switched fused spur has an on/off switch built into the faceplate, letting you isolate the appliance without unplugging it. An unswitched fused spur has no switch — the connection is permanently live whenever the circuit is on, so isolation has to happen elsewhere (for example, at the consumer unit).

When Would I Use a Fused Spur Instead of a Socket?

Fused spurs are typically used for fixed appliances that don't need to be unplugged in normal use, or where a standard socket outlet isn't appropriate — such as connecting a cooker hood, immersion heater, or a fixed appliance behind furniture.

As always, if you're unsure which type is right for your appliance, it's best to check with a qualified electrician before any work is carried out.
