Grid Switches Explained — When to Use a Grid System Instead of Standard Plates

A grid switch system lets you combine several switches, sockets or dimmer modules under a single faceplate. If you're planning a room with several separate functions to control, it's worth considering a grid system before defaulting to multiple standard plates.

When Does a Grid System Make Sense?

Grid systems are especially useful in kitchens, utility rooms, and hallways with several light circuits or appliances to switch — for example, three or four kitchen ceiling circuits and an extractor fan, all controlled from one wall.

Grid System vs Multiple Standard Plates

  • A grid system keeps multiple functions under one neat faceplate, rather than a row of separate plates.

  • Grid modules can usually be mixed and matched — switches, dimmers, sockets and blanks — on the same plate.

  • Standard plates are simpler to plan for smaller rooms with only one or two functions.

What Do I Need to Order?

Our Advice

If you're wiring more than two or three functions into one wall position, a grid system is usually neater and more flexible than lining up several standard plates side by side.
